The nature of a gift

Jen Geenan
Special to The Interim

This was my gift, my gift to him and my gift to the family that adopted him. The true essence of a gift is that it is given freely. Nothing can be expected in return. There can be no strings attached. Neither he nor his parents would be beholden to me. To place him meant giving a part of myself, quite literally, totally, completely and with finality, to another family. Some gifts are not easy to give, especially one so precious. However, the awesome reality, once you have healed, of what you have given to both your child and the adoptive family can truly fill you with such peace and joy.
